Sustainable Florist in New York
We love and respect Mother Nature and want to take care of her and everything living on this Earth, so we’re serious about using environmentally-friendly practices and products. What if we became educated consumers? What if we started to support farmers in our area or look for those near us growing flowers by safe means? What if we instead purchased only locally grown flowers? Support local farmers instead of filling your home with chemical laden flowers. Buy something that has been grown with care. If you have not stopped to consider these issues the last time you purchased flowers, please do! As a sustainable florist in New York, we want to make our customers educated on what is going on behind the scenes.
Sustainable Florist in New York – As florists, we love nature, but the widespread use of floral foam, excessive packaging and flying out-of-season blooms across the world are just some of the problems we must tackle.
Our Promise To You:
We will not be using any:
- plastic card holders (why? just why?)
- plastic wraps + cellophane (unnecessary one-use material that immediately gets thrown out)
- balloons (littering our oceans and choking sea creatures)
- toxic sprays (think glitter, spray paints)
- floral foams (made from hazardous chemicals: phenol + formaldehyde, contributing to the world’s microplastic pollution)
- synthetic pesticides, herbicides + insecticides (carcinogens that pollute waterways and seeps into drinking water)
- any other plastic thingamabobs that get thrown in the trash after looking at them
Send Flowers With Gatsby Gardens Today!
As a sustainable florist, we want to be sure that the items that come with your floral arrangements can be used again, are sustainable, or biodegradable.
We also compost to give back to our soil!
Source flowers from USA growers!
Many years ago, almost all of the cut flowers sold in the United States were grown domestically. Now roughly 80% of our flowers are imports, mostly coming from Latin America. We’ve lost hundreds of family farms and continue to lose American farms due to a number of factors. Flowers being flown in from Latin America are not tested for illegal pesticide residue. These flowers are coated in high levels of illegal chemicals. Also, the workers at these foreign factories suffer from headaches, nausea, miscarriages, and neurological problems; all related to exposure to chemicals, fungicides and pesticides. These chemicals not only hurt humans and animals, but destroy streams and waterways.
A little history of roses …
Roses are classically beautiful flowers that have captivated people for centuries. They’ve inspired countless poets, writers, composers, songwriters and artists over the years.
According to Greek mythology, the goddess of flowers, Chloris, created a new flower by breathing life into a woodland nymph who had died. Dionysus, the god of wine & plant life gave it a beautiful perfume, and Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty & pleasure, gave the rose its name by rearranging the letters of Eros, her son and the god of love & desire.
In 600 B.C. the Greek poet, Sappho, wrote in a poem, “Ode to the Rose”, that this flower was considered the “Queen of flowers”. This sentiment has been expressed many times over the centuries. However, few cultures reveled in the admiration of roses like the Romans. In Roman homes, petals were used to carpet the floors, to fill bathwater, to drop as confetti at parties, and even to eat. A rose hanging from the ceiling of a civic meeting symbolized secrecy and the content of the meeting was to be kept confidential outside the walls.
The ancient Egyptians bathed in rosewater and scattered rose petals to make their rooms sweet-smelling. The Romans grew roses extensively in large public gardens, and Rosa alba could be found in the gardens of nobles and monks in medieval Europe, widely thought to have been spread there by visiting Romans. Every medieval monastery had its botanist monk, cultivating roses alongside other plants and herbs to be used in religious ceremonies.

Gatsby Gardens is growing… our “Little Garden That Could” is getting us excited for what’s to bloom.
We’re grateful for the opportunity to grow, and to witness the sun every morning, showing us that each new day is another chance to be who you wish to be.
“We are a seed patiently waiting in the earth: waiting to come up a flower in the Gardener’s good time, up into the real world, the real waking. I suppose that our whole present life, looked back on from there, will seem only a drowsy half-waking. We are here in the land of dreams.”
CS Lewis
A seed grows in the darkest of places. Remember, that we too go through cycles that are required for our transformation. Allow the time of darkness to be a place of rest so your seeds have time to germinate. You’ll come out of that darkness head first. Not only that, but you’ll come out a stronger, more beautiful expression of yourself.
Just like flowers, we can open into a gorgeous display of our own authenticity. We can’t always see much action in the early stages, but it can only be hidden for so long…
